Keynote Address: Richard Atkinson, MD
Viruses As a Cause of Obesity

The prevalence of obesity in the United States has increased from 15% to 31% from 1980 to 2000 and is still growing. Across the world, obesity increased regardless of economic or educational status. But the geographic pattern was irregular and Richard Atkinson, MD discovered that the pattern of spread may fit with infectious disease etiology. Atkinson's research focused on the mechanisms of weight loss with obesity surgery and on drug treatment of obesity. In recent years, he described the first human virus to cause obesity and currently is evaluating the role of human adenoviruses in the etiology and complications of obesity. Atkinson will present his latest findings and present the evidence for virus-induced obesity in humans and discuss the potential mechanisms of virus-induced obesity. Atkinson will discuss his findings that eight viruses have been shown to increase adiposity in animals. Of particular interest is human adenovirus-36, which has been shown to cause obesity in animals. Hear this compelling evidence that the worldwide obesity epidemic may be caused in part by one or more viruses.

Jørn Dyerberg, M.D.
Closing Plenary Session: Omega 3's in the 21st Century

Omega 3s have been one of the most successful ingredients in the functional foods arena seeing growth not only in consumer awareness and understanding but also from strong interest in clinical research. There have been some 14,000 published papers and nearly 8,000 human studies on omega 3s since the 1970s. But what is next for the phenomenal fatty acids? Omega 3 pioneer Jorn Dyerberg, MD, the first researcher to identify EPA and DHA and their connection in cardiovascular health, relate his experiences in Greenland studying the Inuit and the resulting scientific discoveries as well as present his thoughts and insights on the future of this dynamic category. What role will omega 3s play in the prevalent disorders such as obesity and diabetes; how much more do we know about their effects on brain health; could there be an omega 3 link to cancer precention? Dyerberg will also discuss the implications of these potential discoveries to natural resources for EPA and DHA.
